(EURI) Journey to promote records in Europe (P.474) Les Trois Vallées: The largest connected ski area in Europe

14-05-2026

(Worldkings.org) The ski domain stretches across more than 600 kilometers of marked runs, supported by around 150 ski lifts and hundreds of pistes suitable for beginners, intermediate skiers, and experts alike.

Les Trois Vallées, which translates to “The Three Valleys,” is the largest connected ski area not only in Europe but also in the world. Located in the Savoie region of the French Alps, this enormous winter sports destination is famous for its vast network of interconnected ski slopes and lifts that allow visitors to travel seamlessly between multiple resorts without removing their skis.

The name comes from the three original alpine valleys that formed the core of the resort network: the Saint-Bon Valley, the Allues Valley, and the Belleville Valley. Over time, several major ski resorts developed within these valleys, including Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens, and Les Menuires. Each resort has its own personality and appeal. Courchevel is internationally known for luxury tourism, elegant chalets, and fine dining, while Méribel is admired for its traditional alpine atmosphere and central location within the ski area. Val Thorens, meanwhile, stands out as the highest ski resort in Europe at approximately 2,300 meters above sea level, giving it particularly reliable snow conditions throughout the season.

One of the greatest strengths of Les Trois Vallées is its remarkable connectivity and scale. Skiers can spend several days exploring different valleys, landscapes, and villages without repeating the same routes. The area includes gentle beginner slopes, wide cruising pistes, steep black runs, off-piste terrain, snow parks, and glacier-access skiing, making it attractive to nearly every type of winter sports enthusiast. Modern lift infrastructure also plays a major role in its reputation, with high-capacity gondolas, cable cars, and chairlifts designed to move large numbers of visitors efficiently across the mountains.

The development of Les Trois Vallées began after World War II, during a period when France invested heavily in alpine tourism and ski infrastructure. Courchevel, established in 1946, became one of the country’s first purpose-built ski resorts. As neighboring valleys expanded their own ski facilities, engineers and planners gradually linked them together into one continuous ski domain. This ambitious interconnection project transformed the region into one of the most influential winter tourism destinations in the world.

Today, Les Trois Vallées attracts millions of visitors from around the globe every year. Its combination of immense size, reliable snowfall, high-altitude terrain, luxury accommodations, and picturesque alpine scenery has made it a symbol of world-class skiing. Beyond winter sports, the region is also appreciated for its mountain culture, après-ski lifestyle, gourmet cuisine, and breathtaking views of the French Alps.s
