Dawn Fraser Baths is a historic tidal swimming pool located in Balmain, Sydney, Australia, and is widely regarded as the oldest surviving ocean (harbour) pool in the country and, by extension, the oldest in Oceania.

The baths stretch approximately 50 metres in length and are enclosed by timber decking and structures that extend over the water, preserving much of their original 19th-century character. Located within Elkington Park, the site offers views over the Parramatta River, and at low tide, a small sandy shoreline becomes visible beside the pool. Its setting and construction reflect early approaches to public bathing in coastal Australia, where natural bodies of water were adapted for safer recreational use.

Historically, Dawn Fraser Baths played a significant role in the development of swimming culture in Australia. It was home to the Balmain Swimming Club, established in 1884 and considered one of the country’s earliest swimming clubs. The baths are also closely associated with Dawn Fraser, one of Australia’s most celebrated Olympic swimmers, who trained there during her youth. In recognition of her achievements, the facility was renamed in her honour in 1964.

Today, Dawn Fraser Baths remains both a functional public swimming facility and a heritage-listed site. Its longevity and continued use highlight its cultural and historical importance, offering a rare example of a 19th-century tidal pool that has been preserved and maintained for over 140 years.
