The Yamzho Yumco pumped-storage hydropower station was established in 1989 and has been operating since 1997 to provide power in central Tibet.

The power station harnesses the potential energy stored in the elevated waters of Yamzho Yumco Lake. During periods of low electricity demand, surplus power from the grid is used to pump water from the lower Yamzho Yumco Reservoir to the upper Nyenchen Tanggula Reservoir situated at a higher altitude. When the demand for electricity peaks, the water stored in the upper reservoir is released, flowing back down to the lower reservoir through turbines, generating clean and efficient hydropower.

Yamzho Yumco plays a vital role in the stability and reliability of China's power grid, particularly in the Tibetan region. It helps meet peak electricity demand, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The Yamzho Yumco pumped-storage hydropower station is a remarkable feat of engineering, showcasing the potential of clean energy and its role in supporting a sustainable future.

In 2024, the new world's highest-altitude pumped-storage power station is constructed in Southwest China's Sichuan Province. With an altitude of 4,300 meters, the facility will be the world’s highest-altitude pumped-storage power station in a few years.
