WORLDKINGS - Worldkings News - Asia Records Institute (ASRI): Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology: World’s first institute to create synthesized starch from carbon dioxide

( On September 24, 2021, TIB scientists published a study of the world’s first synthetization starch from carbon dioxide (CO2).

The Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology (TIB) is a research institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), located in Tianjin, China. It is a leading research institution in the field of industrial biotechnology.

On September 24, 2021, TIB scientists published a study in the journal Science that described how they had successfully synthesized starch from carbon dioxide (CO2) in a cell-free system. This was the first time that starch had been synthesized from CO2 in a laboratory setting.

The TIB team used computational design to draft an artificial anabolic pathway from CO2 to starch. This pathway consisted of 11 core reactions, and the team was able to successfully synthesize starch molecules using this pathway in a cell-free system.

This breakthrough has the potential to revolutionize the way that starch is produced. Starch is a major component of food, and it is also used in a wide range of industrial applications, such as papermaking, textiles, and pharmaceuticals. Currently, starch is produced from crops such as corn, wheat, and rice. However, crop production is inefficient and environmentally unsustainable.
