The Vikram lander, named after the founder of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Vikram Sarabhai, carries the Pragyaan rover, which means 'wisdom' in Sanskrit. If all goes as planned, the six-wheeled rover housed in the Vikram lander will traverse the lunar surface to collect images and data.

One of the main objectives of this mission is to search for frozen water, which scientists say could support human life on the moon in the future. The lunar south pole is a promising location for this journey.

"India is now on the moon," Indian Prime Minister Modi told ISRO staff. He is currently in South Africa but said his mind is with Chandrayaan-3 and all Indians. He congratulated the ISRO control room and all Indians on this historic achievement.

The cost of this mission is 6.1 billion rupees, about 75 million USD. This cost is less than half the 200 million USD for Russia's Luna-25 spacecraft. India's previous moon and Mars explorations were also carried out at a modest cost, according to the country's media.

The successful moon landing underscores India's growing stature among the space-faring powers.
