(ASRI) Journey to promote records in Asia (P.493) Zhuoshui Fengyu: The longest covered bridge in Asia

29-07-2026

(Worldkings.org) The bridge stretches an impressive 303 meters (994 feet) in length and measures approximately 5 meters (16.4 feet) wide. It consists of 11 spans sheltered beneath a continuous roof supported by intricately crafted timber frames.

Nestled in the heart of Zhuoshui Ancient Town in Qianjiang District, Chongqing, Zhuoshui Fengyu Bridge is celebrated as the longest covered bridge in Asia. Spanning the tranquil Apeng River, the bridge is far more than a river crossing—it is an architectural landmark that blends transportation, traditional craftsmanship, and cultural heritage into a single remarkable structure. With its elegant wooden pavilions and sweeping tiled roof, the bridge has become one of Chongqing's most recognizable attractions.

One of its most fascinating features is the use of the traditional Chinese mortise-and-tenon construction technique, which allows the massive wooden components to interlock without relying heavily on metal nails. This centuries-old engineering method gives the bridge exceptional strength while preserving the beauty of traditional Chinese architecture. The covered walkway also provides visitors with protection from the elements, making it an inviting place to stroll while enjoying panoramic views of the river and the surrounding ancient town.

The origins of Zhuoshui Fengyu Bridge date back to 1591, during the Ming Dynasty, when the first version of the bridge was built to connect communities along the Apeng River. Over the following four centuries, it underwent several reconstructions after suffering damage from floods, natural wear, and other disasters. In November 2013, a devastating fire destroyed most of the historic bridge, leaving only memories of its iconic silhouette. A meticulous restoration project followed, and after nearly four years of reconstruction, the bridge was officially reopened in July 2017, faithfully recreating its original appearance while ensuring greater structural resilience.

Today, Zhuoshui Fengyu Bridge is both a cultural treasure and a popular tourist destination. As night falls, decorative lighting illuminates the wooden structure, casting shimmering reflections across the Apeng River and creating one of the most picturesque scenes in Chongqing. Combining a history of more than 430 years, masterful traditional craftsmanship, and its remarkable 303-meter span, Zhuoshui Fengyu Bridge stands as a magnificent symbol of Chinese architectural heritage and proudly holds the distinction of Asia's longest covered bridge.
