In 1907, it became a professional orchestral ensemble, and in 1922 it was renamed the Shanghai Municipal Council Symphony Orchestra. Following the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the orchestra adopted its current name, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, in 1956.

With a history spanning more than 145 years, the SSO has played a pioneering role in introducing Western classical music to China while also championing works by Chinese composers. One of the orchestra's most influential figures was the Italian pianist and conductor Mario Paci, who served as its music director from 1919 to 1942. Under his leadership, the orchestra gained an international reputation and was often referred to as "the finest orchestra in the Far East."

Today, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is based at the Shanghai Symphony Hall, which opened in 2014. The venue features a 1,200-seat main concert hall and a 400-seat chamber hall, providing one of China's premier homes for classical music.

The orchestra's current Music Director is the renowned Chinese conductor Long Yu. Over the years, the SSO has performed at many of the world's leading concert venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Berlin Philharmonie. It was also the first Chinese symphony orchestra invited to perform at New York's Central Park SummerStage, reflecting its growing international stature.

As both a cultural ambassador and a cornerstone of China's classical music scene, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra continues to preserve its historic legacy while actively commissioning new works, recording internationally, and collaborating with some of the world's most celebrated conductors and soloists.
