Chongqing East Railway Station is a gigantic high-speed railway hub located in Nan’an District, Chongqing, China. The enormous complex covers approximately 1.22 million square meters, an area often compared to around 170 football fields. Its scale reflects China’s continuing investment in high-speed transportation infrastructure and its ambition to strengthen rail connectivity across western China.

The station was designed to function as a major transportation gateway linking Chongqing with many of China’s key economic regions. It contains 15 platforms and 29 railway tracks, allowing it to handle up to 16,000 passengers per hour during peak operations. Chongqing East serves several major rail corridors, including the Chongqing–Xiamen High-Speed Railway and other important national high-speed routes connecting cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan, and Shenzhen.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the project is the speed and complexity of its construction. The station was reportedly completed in only about 38 months despite being built on mountainous terrain, a challenging environment for large-scale engineering. Chinese engineers used advanced technologies such as AI-assisted construction management, prefabricated structural systems, and robotic equipment to speed up the process while maintaining precision. This achievement has been highlighted internationally as an example of China’s rapid infrastructure development capabilities.
Architecturally, the station combines modern engineering with regional cultural inspiration. Parts of the design were influenced by Chongqing’s mountainous geography and local natural elements, including the shape of huangjue trees and bamboo-scroll motifs. Large glass roofs allow natural light to fill the interior spaces, while the multi-level layout integrates high-speed rail, metro lines, buses, taxis, and commercial facilities into a single transport hub. The station is intended not only as a transportation center but also as a symbol of Chongqing’s growing role as one of western China’s most important urban and economic centers.
