(ASRI) Journey to promote Records in Africa (P.472) Kwento Comics: The first all-women comic book company in Asia

27-05-2026

(WorldKings.org) Kwento Comics officially emerged around 2021–2022 with the release of the first issue of “The Mask of Haliya.”

Kwento Comics is an independent comic book company founded by Cecilia Lim and Waverley Lim, a mother-daughter duo of Filipino heritage. The company is widely described as the world’s first all-Asian, all-women comic book company because its creative team is composed entirely of Asian women writers, artists, editors, colorists, and producers.

The company focuses heavily on Filipino and broader Asian mythology, blending traditional folklore with modern fantasy storytelling. Its mission is not only entertainment, but also increasing representation for Asian women in comics and giving younger readers characters and creators they can identify with.

Their flagship series is “The Mask of Haliya,” a supernatural fantasy comic centered on Marisol Reyes, a Filipina-American teenager who discovers a mystical wooden mask connected to the moon goddess Haliya and ancient Philippine legends. The story mixes mythology, horror, family history, and coming-of-age themes.

Kwento Comics officially emerged around 2021–2022 with the release of the first issue of “The Mask of Haliya.” The company later expanded through comic conventions, digital platforms such as GlobalComix, and crowdfunding campaigns.

One reason the company gained attention in the comic industry is that mainstream Western comics have historically had limited Asian female representation, especially behind the scenes. Kwento Comics positioned itself as a creator-driven platform where Asian women could tell stories rooted in their own cultures and experiences.
