(ASRI 2024) Journey to promote Records in Asia - P66 - Baliyatra (India): The biggest annual open trade fair Asia

08-04-2024

(worldkings.org) Baliyatra, meaning "Voyage to Bali," is the largest annual open-air fair in India. This fair commemorates the 2,000-year-old trade and cultural links between ancient Kalinga (now Odisha) and Bali, along with other regions of South and Southeast Asia including Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Myanmar (Burma), and Sri Lanka (Ceylon).

The fair is held annually in Cuttack, Odisha, India, marking the day when the ancient mariners, known as Sadhabas (Odia seafarers), set sail for trade and cultural expansion to distant lands such as Bali, as well as Java (known at the time of the voyage as "Yawadvipa"), Sumatra, Borneo (all part of Indonesia), and Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon).

Baliyatra begins on Kartika Purnima (the full moon day of the Kartika month in the Odia calendar) and lasts for 7 days or more. The fair is held at the Gadagadia Ghata of the Mahanadi River, marking the day when the ancient mariners, known as Sadhabas (Odia seafarers), set sail for trade and cultural expansion to distant lands such as Bali.

Baliyatra showcases the rich maritime heritage of ancient Odisha. This specific time was considered auspicious by the Sadhabas to commence their journey on boats called Boitas.

In Cuttack, Bali Jatra is held annually as a large open fair near the Barabati Fort area. There are many attractions for children such as toy stalls, Ferris wheels, various games, maut ka kuan (literally, "well of death"), and food stalls selling Odia delicacies (Cuttack Dahibara Aludum, Thunka puri, Kulfi, Gupchup, Mathura Cake, Banarasi Paan, etc.) from different parts of the state, and other vendors selling toys, souvenirs, and other gifts.
