(Worldkings.org) The Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT), officially known as the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G.R. Bus Terminus, is a bus terminus located in Chennai, India, providing inter-state bus services.



The original bus terminus operated from the Broadway terminus near the Madras High Court in George Town, on an area of about 1.5 acres (6,100 m2). With the growing population and transportation needs, a new terminus was planned at Koyambedu. The terminus was planned and construction began on June 6, 1999, by M. Karunanidhi during the DMK government at a cost of 103 crores, and was inaugurated on November 18, 2002, by J. Jayalalithaa during the AIADMK government. On October 9, 2018, it was renamed by the Tamil Nadu government as the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G.R. Bus Terminus in memory of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran.

The terminus has 6 platforms on 3 bus fingers with 180 bus bays. Spread over an area of 36.5 acres (148,000 m2) in Koyambedu, the terminus is ISO 9001:2000 certified for quality management and excellence. It also has an idle parking area for 60 buses and can park 270 buses at any given time.

The CMBT is the largest bus terminus in Asia, with about 800,000 passengers per day and up to 1,000,000 passengers on peak days. It provides inter-state transportation services and is a major transportation hub in Chennai. The Chennai Metro Rail has been operating a bus station behind the bus terminus since 2015.
