(ASRI 2024) Journey to promote Records in Asia - P08 - IIST (India): Asia's First Institute of Space


(Worldkings.org) The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) is the first space university in Asia. IIST was established with the objective of providing high-quality education in space science and technology to meet the demands of the Indian Space Program.

Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thrissur

IIST was established in 2007 by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) under the Department of Space, Government of India. The institute was inaugurated on September 14, 2007, by G. Madhavan Nair, the then Chairman of ISRO. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, was the first Chancellor of IIST.


Academic Programs

IIST is the first institute in Asia and globally to offer the entire spectrum of undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral programs with a focus on space science, technology, and applications. IIST functions as an autonomous body under the Department of Space, Government of India.

Initially, the institute operated from the premises of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. A modern, environmentally friendly student campus was constructed near the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre at Valiamala, Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram, and was inaugurated by Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India on August 25, 2009. The institute began operations at the new campus from August 15, 2010.

IIST was established with the vision of meeting the demand for scientists and engineers in the Indian Space Program, by providing undergraduate and postgraduate education as well as research programs in space science and technology.
