[365 GLOBAL RECORD NEWS] India record: SheCycling initiative sets Record for India's largest multi-location cycling literacy campaign for women

08-07-2026

(worldkings.org) The Indian Book of Records (IBR) has recognized an inspiring community initiative led by Prakash P. Gopinath of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, and a co-trainer for conducting the largest cycling literacy campaign for women across multiple locations in India.

Born on May 27, 1965, Prakash P. Gopinath launched the SheCycling Initiative with the goal of empowering women and girls through cycling education. Using a structured five-day practical training model, the two trainers successfully taught 700 women and girls how to ride bicycles, helping participants develop confidence, practical skills, and greater independence in daily mobility.

The campaign was carried out between October 2022 and October 2024, covering 19 locations across Kerala as well as Srinagar and Leh in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Conducting the program across such a wide geographical area required careful coordination and consistent training standards, enabling participants from diverse communities to benefit from the initiative.

Rather than focusing solely on cycling as a recreational activity, the SheCycling Initiative was designed to improve independent mobility for women. Learning to ride a bicycle can significantly expand access to education, employment, healthcare, and community participation, particularly for women and girls who may have limited transportation options. By equipping participants with this practical life skill, the initiative sought to strengthen confidence and encourage greater self-reliance.

The campaign also promoted cycling as a sustainable, zero-carbon mode of transportation. Encouraging bicycle use supports environmentally friendly mobility while offering an affordable and accessible means of travel. In this way, the initiative combined social empowerment with environmental responsibility, demonstrating how a simple skill can generate meaningful long-term benefits for both individuals and communities.

The Indian Book of Records officially confirmed the achievement on April 16, 2026, recognizing the accomplishment under the title "Largest Cycling Literacy Campaign for Women Conducted Across Multiple Locations in India by a Duo." The record celebrates not only the successful training of 700 women and girls but also the broader impact of promoting gender empowerment, sustainable transportation, and inclusive community development through the SheCycling Initiative.
