India’s Independence Day in 2026 was marked by a spectacular community gathering in Dombivli, where approximately 20,000 participants formed a human chain to carry a giant Indian National Flag. The initiative was organized by the Dr. Shrikant Shinde Foundation, Mumbai, together with more than 100 organizations, and was recognized for creating the longest Indian National Flag carried by a human chain.

The event, titled Vishwavikrami Tiranga Rally-Kalyan Loksabha – 2026, was held on August 15, 2026, coinciding with India’s Independence Day. During the rally, approximately 20,000 participants carried a Tiranga measuring 2,125 metres in length. The flag was 5 feet wide, equivalent to approximately 1.524 metres, and covered an area of approximately 3,257.5 square metres.

The enormous dimensions of the flag required extensive coordination among participants along the rally route. Rather than being displayed as a stationary installation, the flag was carried collectively by the human chain, allowing its full length to become part of the moving procession.

The rally began at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk and concluded at Zenda Chowk – Swatantryaveer Savarkar. The route provided the setting for a large-scale public celebration that combined community participation, collective effort and patriotic expression on India’s national day.

The Tiranga, India’s national flag, is characterized by its three horizontal colour bands and the Ashoka Chakra at the centre. During the Dombivli rally, the enormous flag extended for more than 2 kilometres, creating a striking visual representation of national pride as it moved along the procession route.

The participation of more than 100 organizations was another important element behind the scale of the event. Their collective involvement, together with the approximately 20,000 participants, enabled the organizers to stage an extensive public celebration centered on the national flag.

The Vishwavikrami Tiranga Rally-Kalyan Loksabha – 2026 therefore combined a national celebration with a large-scale record attempt. The 2,125-metre flag, carried by a human chain of approximately 20,000 people, became the central symbol of the event.

The India Book of Records confirmed the achievement on August 15, 2026, recognizing the longest Indian National Flag carried by a human chain, organized by the Dr. Shrikant Shinde Foundation in collaboration with more than 100 organizations.
