WORLDKINGS - Worldkings News - America Records Institute (AMRI) Spanish Aero Car: World's oldest suspended cable car line

( Built in 1916, the Spanish Aero Car or Whirlpool Aero Car is the only cable car of its era left in the world.

The Spanish Aero Car is a cable car located in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. It is suspended over the Niagara Whirlpool, a section of the Niagara River known for its powerful currents and turbulent waters. The car is suspended by steel cables and travels at a height of 76 meters above the water. The ride takes about 10 minutes and offers stunning views of the whirlpool and the surrounding gorge.

The Spanish Aero Car was designed by Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo and was built in 1916. It is the only cable car of its era left in the world.

The Aero Car is suspended on six interlocking steel cables, each of which is 25 mm in diameter. The car is powered by an electric 50 horsepower (37 kW) motor and travels at approximately 7 km/h. In the event of a power failure, a diesel engine drives a hydraulic pump to pull the carrier back to the loading/unloading terminal. It also has a rescue car which holds four passengers and one operator. The rescue car has so far only been used for training purposes.

It is also a National Historic Site of Canada.
