Located atop Cerro Pachón in Chile's Coquimbo Region, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory is one of the world's most advanced astronomical facilities. Named after American astronomer Vera C. Rubin, whose pioneering work provided key evidence for the existence of dark matter, the observatory is centered around the Simonyi Survey Telescope, featuring an 8.4-meter primary mirror. The telescope was purpose-built to conduct rapid, wide-field surveys of the night sky with unprecedented precision.

The camera boasts an extraordinary 3,200-megapixel (3.2-gigapixel) resolution, measures approximately 4.5 meters in length, weighs over 3 metric tons, and contains 189 scientific CCD sensors arranged into the largest focal plane ever constructed for astronomy. Each image captured is approximately 6 GB in size and covers a field of view about seven times the apparent diameter of the full Moon, allowing astronomers to observe vast regions of the sky in a single exposure.
The LSST Camera is the heart of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), a 10-year project that will repeatedly map the southern sky. The observatory is expected to capture hundreds to around 1,000 images every night, scanning the entire visible southern sky every few nights and producing the most comprehensive time-lapse record of the universe ever created. The survey is expected to catalog tens of billions of celestial objects, enabling discoveries of new asteroids, supernovae, and other transient phenomena while providing invaluable data for research on dark matter, dark energy, and the evolution of galaxies. Even during its initial commissioning phase, the observatory demonstrated its remarkable capability by discovering more than 11,000 previously unknown asteroids, highlighting the transformative scientific potential of its groundbreaking imaging system.
