WORLDKINGS - Worldkings News - Africa Records Institute (AFRI) Masjid Misr Mosque: Home to the world’s heaviest chandelier

05-10-2023

(WorldKings.org) Masjid Misr Mosque houses the world’s heaviest chandelier, which is 24,300 Kg in weight.

Masjid Misr Mosque (also known as the Grand Mosque of Egypt) is the largest mosque in Africa and the third largest in the Middle East. It is located in the New Administrative Capital, Egypt. The mosque was inaugurated in August 2022.

With its substantial scale, the mosque is part of the recently inaugurated Islamic Cultural Center in the New Administrative Capital, a new hub for Islamic research, congregation and tourism which hosts one-of-a-kind Quran recital halls and multipurpose halls.

Covering an area of 250,000 sqm, the sprawling nature of the centre provides the mosque with exterior courts that allow it to accommodate approximately 131,000 worshippers; a capacity that’s third only to the two Holy Mosques in Mecca and Medina.

A major element of how mosques are experienced is their soundscape, their resonance and reverberations. While most traditional mosques have haphazardly placed speakers, the entire sound system in Masjid Misr remains hidden, while sound insulation throughout its surfaces ensures ethereal echoes during prayers.

Masjid Misr Mosque also house the world’s heaviest chandelier. It’s 24,300 Kg in weight. The chandelier hangs midair under the main dome, with lanterns offering a nostalgic aura within its Islamic star design. Egyptian crystal manufacturing company Asfour Crystal International is the maker. The chandelier hangs above a padded carpet featuring delicate foliage drawings.
