(AFRI) Journey to promote Records in Africa (P.457) Oued Rmel PV: The largest operational floating solar power plant in Africa

10-07-2026

(worldkings.org) Oued Rmel PV is the largest operational floating solar power plant in Africa. Located on the Oued Rmel Dam reservoir near Ksar Sghir in northern Morocco, close to the Tanger Med port complex, the facility was developed by H2air PX, the construction subsidiary of France's H2air Group. With an installed capacity of 13 MW, the plant supplies renewable electricity to the industrial and port operations of Tanger Med, one of the Mediterranean's busiest logistics hubs.

The project consists of three floating photovoltaic islands covering a combined surface area of approximately 72,870 square metres. According to H2air PX, the plant generates enough electricity to meet the annual consumption of around 17,000 people in France. Its commissioning marks a significant milestone for floating solar technology in Africa, surpassing other operational projects on the continent, including Ghana's 5 MW Bui Dam floating solar plant.

Constructing the facility required innovative engineering solutions due to the reservoir's challenging conditions. Water levels fluctuate between 35 and 79 metres, creating a vertical variation of 44 metres throughout the year. To ensure stability and long-term performance, the project incorporates specially designed floating platforms and anchoring systems capable of adapting to these changing water levels.

Because the Oued Rmel reservoir also serves as a source of freshwater for surrounding communities, the project includes continuous water quality monitoring systems to comply with environmental protection requirements. H2air PX oversaw the overall engineering and project coordination, including the integration of photovoltaic modules, inverters and the electrical substation. Construction was carried out by a consortium comprising EnergyDesign for civil engineering and installation, Seaflex for the floating anchoring and mooring systems, and Profloating for the floating support structures.

As Morocco continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio, Oued Rmel PV demonstrates the growing potential of floating photovoltaic technology to generate clean electricity while making efficient use of existing water reservoirs, reinforcing the country's position as a regional leader in sustainable energy development.
