The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Johannesburg, South Africa, was developed by the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), a global Hindu spiritual and humanitarian organization rooted in the Swaminarayan tradition of Hinduism.
The complex occupies approximately 5.9 hectares, equivalent to around 59,000 square meters of land, with more than 37,000 square meters of built-up space. This makes it the biggest Hindu temple and cultural campus on the African continent by overall size. The site includes not only the main stone mandir but also large cultural halls, educational facilities, gardens, gathering spaces, and community-centered infrastructure.
Architecturally, the mandir follows traditional Hindu temple design inspired by ancient Indian craftsmanship. The structure features elaborately carved stone pillars, domes, ceilings, and decorative motifs created using traditional carving techniques. The temple’s design combines sacred symbolism with monumental architecture, making it one of the most visually impressive Hindu religious structures ever constructed in Africa.
The complex was designed to serve a broader role beyond worship alone. In addition to daily prayers and religious ceremonies, it functions as a center for cultural education, youth development, language classes, exhibitions, charity initiatives, and interfaith dialogue. BAPS has emphasized that the site is intended to promote values such as peace, service, family unity, and multicultural understanding among people of all backgrounds.
