De Heus is a Dutch multinational specializing in livestock nutrition, and the Athi River plant represents one of its most significant investments in Africa. The facility was officially opened in February 2026 as part of the company’s broader strategy to expand feed production capacity across emerging agricultural markets.

The mill is designed as a modern, industrial feed production complex capable of manufacturing a wide range of products, including compound feeds, concentrates, and premixes for poultry, pigs, cattle, and aquaculture.

The project required an investment of roughly KES 3 billion (about USD 23 million), reflecting its importance not only as a manufacturing site but also as a strategic hub for regional agricultural development. Feed is the single largest cost component in livestock production—typically accounting for 60 to 70 percent—so improving the availability of high-quality, locally produced feed has a direct impact on farm productivity and profitability.
