NSS Somerset West is a large, purpose-built aerospace manufacturing facility operated by NewSpace Systems in Somerset West. Officially opened on March 19, 2026, it is described as Africa’s largest commercial space hardware manufacturing facility, marking a significant milestone in the continent’s growing role in the global space industry. The site functions as an integrated production hub where satellite components are designed, assembled, and tested under one roof.

The facility focuses on producing high-precision spacecraft subsystems, particularly in the field of guidance, navigation, and control (GNC). These include components such as sun sensors, reaction wheels, magnetometers, and GPS-related systems. Such hardware is essential for satellites to determine their orientation, maintain stability, and execute maneuvers while in orbit. Without these systems, satellites would be unable to function reliably in space.

In terms of scale and capability, the Somerset West site spans roughly 5,200 square meters, including over 1,200 square meters of ISO-certified cleanroom space. It is equipped with specialized infrastructure such as optical testing labs, thermal vacuum environments, and magnetic calibration systems. These allow engineers to simulate the harsh conditions of space and ensure that every component meets stringent aerospace standards before deployment.
