Ukerewe Island is the largest inland island in Africa. It lies within Lake Victoria, the continent’s largest lake, and forms part of Tanzania. The island sits in the southeastern portion of the lake, roughly 45 kilometers north of the lakeside city of Mwanza. Ukerewe is also the main island of the Ukerewe Archipelago, a group of smaller islands scattered across this section of Lake Victoria.

The island stretches approximately 46 kilometers in length and about 20 kilometers at its widest point. Because of its large size, Ukerewe is not just the biggest lake island in Africa but also ranks among the largest lake islands in the world, often listed around fifth place globally.

The island is home to a significant population and functions as an administrative district within Tanzania. Its main town, Nansio, serves as the local economic and government center. Fishing, small-scale farming, and trade with nearby mainland areas are the primary economic activities. The surrounding waters of Lake Victoria provide abundant fish, making fishing communities an important part of life on the island.

Ukerewe’s landscape is characterized by rolling hills, rocky shores, and fertile farmland. The island’s relatively isolated position has helped preserve aspects of traditional life and culture among local communities, while ferry connections link it regularly with Mwanza and other settlements around Lake Victoria. Today, Ukerewe remains both a geographic landmark and an important local hub within the lake region.
