Officially approved by the Nigerian government and licensed by the National Universities Commission in 2025, IBUAM was founded by aviation expert and entrepreneur Engineer Isaac Balami with the vision of closing the significant skill gaps in the continent’s aviation sector. The university was created in response to projections that Africa will need tens of thousands of trained aviation professionals in the coming decades, offering an educational model that blends rigorous academic study with real-world, industry-aligned training.

Unlike traditional universities that focus solely on classroom learning, IBUAM’s curriculum integrates academic degrees with practical, hands-on training. Students not only pursue undergraduate programmes in fields such as aerospace engineering, aviation management, and related technical disciplines, but they also engage in active flight training, aircraft maintenance practice, and simulation exercises. Graduates can earn professional qualifications such as Private Pilot Licences and internationally recognised aircraft maintenance certifications aligned with standards set by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). This approach ensures that students leave the university not just with a degree but with the skills and certifications needed to compete in the global aviation industry.
The establishment of IBUAM is seen as a transformative milestone for aviation education in Africa. At its unveiling in Abuja, leaders in government and the aviation sector described the institution as a revolutionary force that combines a flying school, a management faculty, and an operational maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility under one roof. With partnerships that include aircraft training providers and multinational aviation firms, IBUAM aims to produce highly skilled pilots, engineers, and managers who are capable of driving innovation and contributing significantly to Africa’s growing air transport industry.
