Ethiopian Airlines is the national flag-carrier airline of Ethiopia and one of the most influential aviation companies on the African continent. Founded in 1945 and headquartered at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, the airline is wholly owned by the Ethiopian government. From relatively modest beginnings, it has grown into Africa’s largest airline by fleet size, passenger numbers, and network reach, serving destinations across Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas. Ethiopian Airlines is also a member of the global Star Alliance, which connects it to major international carriers worldwide.

The airline is widely recognized for its role in modernizing African aviation, particularly through heavy investment in new aircraft, pilot training, and aviation education. Ethiopian Airlines operates one of the youngest and most technologically advanced fleets in Africa, including long-haul aircraft such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A350. Beyond commercial operations, it also runs the Ethiopian Aviation Academy, one of the largest aviation training centers in Africa, training pilots, cabin crew, and technicians from across the continent.
Ethiopian Airlines gained global attention for its leadership in gender inclusion when it launched Africa’s first international flight operated entirely by women. In 2015, the airline operated an all-female-crew international flight, followed by a high-profile Addis Ababa–Lagos service in which every role—pilots, cabin crew, aircraft technicians, dispatchers, and ground staff—was performed by women. These flights were not symbolic demonstrations but fully scheduled commercial services, highlighting the airline’s long-term commitment to expanding women’s participation in aviation.
Through this milestone, Ethiopian Airlines positioned itself not only as a commercial aviation leader but also as a social pioneer within Africa’s transport sector. The all-female international flight has since become a defining example of how African institutions can challenge global stereotypes, promote professional equality, and set industry benchmarks at a continental level.
