(AFRI) Journey to promote Records in Africa (P.417) CeraFab Lab L30: The first industrial ceramic 3D printer in Africa

17-01-2026

(worldkings.org) The CeraFab Lab L30 was installed and became operational in South Africa in 2022, marking the first industrial ceramic 3D printer in Africa.

The CeraFab Lab L30 is a ceramic 3D printer model by Lithoz (Austria) that was installed at the Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacture (CRPM), Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State. This installation is widely recognised as the first time a true industrial-grade ceramic 3D printer was installed and operated in Africa, which is why it is often described as Africa’s first ceramic 3D printer.

The CeraFab Lab L30 is a high-precision ceramic additive manufacturing system that uses Lithography-based Ceramic Manufacturing (LCM) technology. In this process, a photosensitive ceramic slurry is selectively cured layer by layer using projected light. After printing, the green part undergoes debinding and sintering, resulting in dense, high-performance ceramic components with very fine detail and excellent mechanical properties. This technology is especially suited to advanced ceramics that are difficult or impossible to manufacture using conventional methods.

In South Africa, the printer was installed as part of a national research initiative led by CUT, supported by the Department of Science and Innovation, with a strong focus on medical and biomedical applications. The system enables the local development of ceramic components such as biocompatible implants, dental parts, and advanced medical devices, reducing dependence on imported technologies and strengthening local innovation capacity.

It is important to be precise in wording. The CeraFab Lab L30 itself is not a South African invention, nor is Lithoz an African company. However, the machine’s installation at CUT represents the first operational industrial ceramic 3D printer on the African continent, making South Africa the entry point for this advanced ceramic manufacturing technology in Africa.
