Id Mjahdi is a small rural village in north-western Morocco, near the Essaouira region, recognized as the first village in Africa to be powered entirely by solar energy.

Before 2019, Id Mjahdi had very limited access to electricity due to its remote location. The solar project introduced a self-contained energy system based entirely on solar photovoltaic panels combined with battery storage, allowing the village to operate independently from the national electricity grid. From the moment it became operational, all electricity used in the village came solely from solar power.

The system supplies electricity to around 20 households, serving more than 50 residents, and also powers shared facilities such as a water tower, a traditional public hammam, and community and learning spaces. Reliable electricity has improved daily life by enabling lighting, refrigeration, water heating, and other essential services that were previously unavailable or unreliable.

Since its launch in 2019, Id Mjahdi has also become a platform for local economic and social development. Access to stable solar electricity has supported small-scale activities such as argan oil processing, helping residents increase income while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the energy system. As a result, Id Mjahdi is often cited as a model for solar-powered rural electrification in Africa, showing how clean energy can drive both infrastructure improvement and community resilience.
