Juliet Crew is a pioneering all-female wildland firefighting team based in Cape Town, South Africa. The crew was created under an all-women wildland firefighting initiative led by a South African environmental and fire-management organisation, with support from training and community safety partners. Its main goal is twofold: to increase women’s representation in firefighting, a field traditionally dominated by men, and to provide employment, skills, and long-term career pathways for women from previously disadvantaged communities.

Members of Juliet Crew undergo the same physical, technical, and safety training as male wildfire firefighters. They are deployed on real fire lines and have taken part in major wildfire responses in the Western Cape, including fires in mountainous and conservation areas. Their work includes fire suppression, creating firebreaks, controlled burning, and post-fire recovery support.

Beyond firefighting, Juliet Crew has become a symbol of gender empowerment in Africa, demonstrating that women can meet the extreme physical and mental demands of wildfire response. The project has also drawn attention to broader issues such as unemployment, gender inequality, and access to professional training for women in high-risk occupations.
