Cairo International Airport is the main gateway to Egypt and one of the busiest airports in Africa. As air traffic in and out of Cairo continued to grow, the airport went through several expansions to improve its capacity and safety. One of the most important upgrades was the construction of a new air-traffic control (ATC) tower, a structure designed to give controllers a full, unobstructed view of the airport so they can guide aircraft safely during takeoff, landing, and ground movement.

The ATC tower at Cairo International Airport stands 110 metres tall, making it the tallest air-traffic control tower in Africa according to industry listings of the world’s tallest ATC towers. Its height is not simply for visual effect — the elevated position allows controllers to see all three of the airport’s runways clearly, including the newest runway that was added during the airport’s major expansion. This is especially important because Cairo handles a large number of daily flights, both domestic and international.
Inside the tower, the control room has an area of about 85 square metres, providing enough space for controllers and high-precision equipment. Below it, the technical and support areas cover around 3,000 square metres, containing the systems needed to manage radar data, communications, and navigation services. The tower was completed and put into operation in 2010, becoming a central part of the airport’s modernization.
Today, the Cairo ATC tower is not only a symbol of the airport’s growth but also a crucial operational facility. Its combination of height, advanced technology, and strategic design helps ensure smoother and safer aircraft movements at one of the region’s busiest aviation hubs.
