Lumenocity is a large-scale light art festival held in Cape Town, South Africa, and is recognized as Africa’s first festival dedicated entirely to light-based art and immersive illumination experiences. It transforms urban public space into a nighttime cultural showcase, where light is used as the primary creative medium rather than just a decorative element.

The festival brings together artists, designers, and technologists to create multidisciplinary works that combine projection mapping, digital art, architecture, and sound. These installations are often interactive, allowing visitors to engage directly with the artworks through movement, touch, or sensory input, turning the experience into something participatory rather than purely observational.
The inaugural edition took place from April 9 to April 12, 2026, in Cape Town’s historic Company’s Garden. During this period, the venue was reimagined with large-scale installations, illuminated pathways, and projection displays cast onto surrounding cultural landmarks. The event featured more than 20 artworks, each designed to explore different themes through light, space, and technology.
A defining feature of Lumenocity is its strong emphasis on local creative talent. All installations are produced by South African artists, positioning the festival as both a platform for national artistic expression and a milestone in placing Africa within the global network of major light festivals. In this sense, Lumenocity functions not only as a public spectacle but also as a cultural statement about innovation and contemporary African art.
