WORLDKINGS - On This Day - October 03, 2019 - Washington declares first national day of thanksgiving in 1789
(Worldkings.org) Thanksgiving wasn’t always the fourth Thursday of November. While the holiday has roots dating back to the Pilgrims and post-harvest celebrations, it wasn’t until the late 17th century that a Thanksgiving-style holiday became customary throughout New England. In 1777, the Continental Congress – a convention of delegates from the 13 colonies – declared a holiday in celebration of a victory during the Revolutionary War.
