WORLDKINGS - Worldkings News - Europe Records Institute (EURI) – Livraria Bertrand: World's oldest operating bookstore

25-03-2020

(Worldkings.org) Livraria Bertrand is the world's oldest operating bookstore.

Livraria Bertrand is the oldest operating bookstore in the world, founded in 1732 in Lisbon, Portugal. The original bookstore in Lisbon's Chiado neighborhood was declared as the oldest, operating bookstore in the world in 2016.

The bookstore was opened by Peter Faure as a small shop in the central Rua Direito do Loreto. It was a favorite haunt of Portuguese writers and intellectuals across different generations.

In 2010, the Livraria Bertrand became part of the Porto Editora group, with branches all over the country. The original remains a Lisbon literary landmark, just like Faure envisioned when he started his business nearly three centuries ago.

Today, Bertrand operates a network of 52 shops across Portugal. Bertrand has been frequented by numerous famous authors, including Alexandre Herculano, Fernando Pessoa, Eca de Queiros, Antero de Quental and Ramalho Ortigão,
